How to Get Strong and Free.

How to Get Strong and Free.

So if you’re resigned to fear, inertia, boredom, isolation, selfishness, or aimlessness, YOU ARE NOT FREE. All that stuff is diminishing you, stealing your potential and keeping you from your good life purpose.

I’m not saying my life is easy now, it’s just hard in different ways. I had to confront my own fear, shame, loneliness, anxiety and love of control. Believe me, it’s a process, but you can’t get free and whole without swimming that moat, and the only way you become a good swimmer is by swimming.

The Scariest Thing I've Ever Done

The Scariest Thing I've Ever Done

In some ways, I was the best version of myself in Africa, because Mercy Ships, my colleagues and God forced me to be. They kept putting me in situations where I had to confront my fear of failure and relentless need for perfection. The Esther Project was a perfect example.

It’s tempting to want to run back there because Mercy Ships was the fire by which I warmed myself while I learned what I know about God and faith. However, there comes a time to build your own fire - so others can keep warm while they learn it too. This is why Girl Catch Fire exists.

Seriously, Is This All There Is?

Seriously, Is This All There Is?

If you enjoy the first three levels on Maslow’s hierarchy, every day, almost without thinking, who is better equipped than you to help someone who doesn’t even have level one?

Whether across the world or across the street, those people are everywhere, and you - middle to upper class American women - are in a position to send your elevator back down help them up.

And actually, that’s where your own joy and esteem is found.

It's a Process.

It's a Process.

Three Things:

  1. If you are going to choose courage over fear and do the thing God designed you to do, it’s going to cost you things you can’t imagine. However, most of those things, you were never meant to have anyway.

  2. The fire is painful. Ask me. Ask Billy Beane. Ask Elon Musk. Ask any artist or creator who has decided to make something out of nothing but a wispy curiosity.

  3. The pain is normal and is critical to your growth and refinement.
